School Savvy

What is
School Savvy?

In 2026, School Savvy FNQ celebrates its 10th year - a decade of proving that it takes a village to get every child back to school with dignity and pride.

When we first began, everything was grassroots and community-driven - every uniform, pencil case, and notebook was donated second-hand. Today, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and partners, our village has grown. Families can now access a mix of new stationery, backpacks, lunchboxes, and other essentials, alongside quality pre-loved uniforms.

School Savvy remains our community’s village response, ensuring back-to-school costs are never a barrier to education. With affordable uniforms, supplies, and even free haircuts, thousands of children walk into the classroom each year feeling equal, included, and ready to learn.

Our Origins

School Savvy began in Cairns in 2016, not as a program, but as a grassroots village response during Anti-Poverty Week - a simple idea to help children and families step into the new school year with dignity. In those early days, everything was donated and second-hand: uniforms, stationery, and supplies sorted by volunteers and offered through pop-up shops for a coin donation.

What started small has grown into a movement. With the support of our sponsors, School Savvy has expanded beyond Cairns to Townsville, Rockhampton, Mackay, and Gladstone, with Toowoomba and Brisbane preparing to join in 2025. Our village has also grown in strength - now providing a mix of new and pre-loved items, from backpacks and lunchboxes to scientific calculators and stationery, all helping children return to school proud and prepared.

From the beginning, School Savvy has been powered by the generosity of volunteers, local businesses, schools, and community groups. It’s a reminder that when the whole village shows up, every child has the chance to thrive.

How to Access
School Savvy

  • Visit our School Savvy Pop Up Shop in January —find us in your area for essential school supplies and uniforms! No referral required.
  • Our preference is for you to contact the School Guidance Officer at your school outside of January popups.
    • Your school's Guidance Officer will fill in a Referral Form, which they will email to School Savvy.
    • The School Savvy Team will then contact your family directly and provide assistance with essential school supplies & uniforms.

Pop-Up Shops

Every January, our School Savvy pop-up shops open their doors — bringing the whole village together to get children back to school with dignity and confidence. Families can access affordable pre-loved uniforms, essential stationery, and even free student haircuts, all made possible by the generosity of local businesses, volunteers, and community partners.

While the shops run in January, School Savvy is active year-round. From February to December, families can connect with their School Guidance Officer or local service provider for a referral to access uniforms and supplies through the program.

At our pop-ups, you’ll also find other community services and businesses on-site, offering resources and support to help families start the school year strong.

What We Nee

Every village has its generous givers — and your donations help carry the load for families across Far North Queensland. Right now, we’re seeking:

  • Pre-loved or new uniforms for primary and high school students (especially public schools)
  • Backpacks in good condition
  • Primary school shoes (runners of any colour)
  • High school shoes (black or white runners)
  • Scientific calculators
  • New lunchboxes and water bottles (for hygiene reasons)

Donations are welcomed from Cairns and surrounding areas including Atherton, Tully, Mareeba, Mossman, Babinda, and Innisfail.

Together, these contributions become more than supplies — they become confidence, dignity, and opportunity for local children.
