Centacare FNQ through funding by the Department of Communities is delivering the Southern Cairns Community Connection and Resilience Project. This asset based community development project is being led by Levaai Rea who has a strong connection to the Southern Corridor region with over 16 years’ experience in the community service sector.

The Aims of the Southern Cairns Community Connection and Resilience Project are as follows:

  • to build on the strengths and resilience throughout the southern corridor of Cairns
  • to link and connect CALD communities to available services in the southern corridor
  • to create a platform for community to come together, explore their strengths and build connections

It has been a busy few months for the project. The team has been catching up with more migrant communities and faith leaders. The Bentley Park College Expo along with the Community Champions project allowed the project team to capture the voice of the youth through a ‘ What’s great about the South?’ and ‘What could make the South even greater’? The Youth bring a lot of fun and ‘young wisdom’ to the project.

On Tuesday 17th November, the project held its second Steering Committee Meeting at Hambledon House with over 20 people gathering to steer the project as it begins to unpack opportunities to build connections and grow community capacity.

Some of the Connections growing and Initiatives taking shape already include:

  • Sikh Community Monthly Outreach Visits
  • School Savvy FNQ - supporting families with back to school needs on the Southside
  • Migrant Communities Grant Writing Workshops
  • Faith Leaders Network
  • Multicultural Women’s Group
  • Migrant Workplace & Conversational English Classes

Over the next six months, the project will continue to support the growth of connections in the region and deliver capacity building workshops co-designed with community.
